The NSW National Coursing Association Ltd was formed by the late Richard Coombes and his late brother Frank Coombes and has been firmly entrenched in the fabric of Australian greyhound racing ever since.
The NSW NCA's major racing base was the famous Rooty Hill track where many of the countries finest greyhounds competed in the "coursing" events before the mechanical lure became the major form of racing.
The Orange racecourse enclosure was the first to host the NSW Waterloo Cup under the NSW NCA banner, arguably the most famous of all coursing events in Australia. Winners of the Waterloo Cup include the legendary Terminus in 1926 and again in 1927, Andy in 1929, Andy's Choice (a son of Andy) in 1931 and Tecoma Dan in 1935.
When the NCA's major complex Wentworth Park was enjoying its glory days in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's, crowds would often reach the 25,000 mark with yearly averages of more than 16,000 patrons per meeting.
In 1975, the NSW NCA finalised nine years of negotiations when it signed a 50 year lease for the use of the Wentworth Park complex. In 1987, the other major greyhound body in New South Wales, the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers, relocated its main racing base from Harold Park to enter into a shared arrangement with the NCA at Wentworth Park.
The NSW NCA left racing at Wentworth Park in 2008 to focus firmly on its business at The Gardens Complex.
In September 2005 the National Coursing Association officially opened The Gardens Greyhound & Sporting Complex, located at Birmingham Gardens on the outskirts of Newcastle.
Recognised as one of the leading greyhound facilities in the world, The Gardens has been a great success, constantly hosting large crowds in it’s many facilities and receiving excess nominations for all race meetings.
Showcasing its position as a multi-purpose venue, Betchoice Gardens also houses local soccer associations and also is the scene for local church-goers each and every Sunday.
At Betchoice Gardens the NSW National Coursing Association has many features events, with the flagship being the Group 1 National Derby and National Futurity. Others include the Group 2 Multicam Black Top, Group 3 Newcastle Cup and St Leger and it’s two feature maidens, the Group 3 Laurie Healion Memorial and Mega Maiden.
The corporate facilities at Betchoice Gardens are second to none, and with a 127 race meetings at the complex a year, it is an essential component of greyhound racing in Australia.
In its rich history, the NSW NCA also hosted the NSW Greyhound of the Year until 2007, with some of the countries greatest greyhounds in the past 35 years appear on the honour roll.
In late 2010, the National Coursing Association signed a landmark sponsorship deal with corporate bookmaking firm, Betchoice, meaning the complex is tagged as Betchoice Gardens for the next six years.
This exciting sponsorship deal is another positive step for the National Coursing Association is it continues its long and rich history in greyhound racing.
